Defining Product Metrics
When you build a product or release a new feature, how do you determine if its successful or not? One way is through product metrics.
Consumer apps such as TikTok and Instagram are able to create beautiful and addictive experiences because as you continue to use the product, they are collecting data on you. They’re collecting data on your user habits and what you like and don’t like. This is the essence of data driven product management.
How do you come up with good product metrics? Use the GAME Framework.
- Goal. What’s the goal of the feature or product?
- Actions. What are the core actions you want users to perform?
- Metrics. How can you relate those core actions and quantify it through metrics?
- Evaluate. Once the product is released, how are these metrics performing? Any false-negatives or false-positives? Is the data trending how you expect?
