My Favorite Scene from the Simpsons- Do it For Her
I don’t really watch the Simpsons but this scene from the episode, And Maggie Makes Three, is my favorite.
In this scene, Homer returns to his old job at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant after quitting to pursue his dream of working at a bowling alley. However, when Marge becomes pregnant with Maggie, Homer realizes that his salary at the bowling alley isn’t enough to support a family of five. With no other choice, he goes back to the nuclear plant, head down, and asks for his old job back.
When Homer meets Mr. Burns, his former boss informs him that it’s company policy to give returning employees a “special demotivational plaque.” The plaque reads: “Don’t Forget. You’re Here Forever.” Mr. Burns hangs it prominently above Homer’s desk.
Homer comes home to Marge, admitting how miserable he is about returning to the job he hates. But everything changes when he’s at the hospital and Maggie is born. Holding his newborn daughter gives Homer a renewed sense of purpose and meaning.
In a flash-forward, Bart asks Homer why there are no pictures of Maggie around the house. Homer replies that he does have pictures of Maggie—he keeps them where they’re needed most. The scene then cuts to Homer’s office, where Maggie’s photos completely cover the walls and the plaque above his desk. Her pictures strategically obscure parts of the plaque, transforming its message into: “Do It For Her.”
