# How to Get Them On Your Side
As part of my job, I don’t have any direct reports, so I have to rely on soft influence to get things done.
When working with a peer, I like to understand their goals, motivations, and incentives. Once I do, I can act in a way that aligns with them.
For example, one of my designers mentioned that he wants to do more discovery work. Since we’re currently in the researching our problem space, I can delegate that task to him, knowing it aligns with his interests.
