Ise Grand Shrine

Ise Grand Shrine in Ise, JapanIse Grand Shrine in Ise, Japan

The Ise Grand shrine is a mass timber complex dating back to 1300 years ago. What’s interesting about this shrine complex is that it’s rebuilt from the ground up every 20 years in a process called Shikinen Sengū. And this has been an ongoing tradition for more than a thousand years. The purpose of this tradition is the belief in tokowaka, which means renewing objects to maintain a strong sense of divine prestige in pursuit of eternity, and as a way of passing building techniques from one generation to the next.”
