On Buying For Life
When I was first buying new clothes for my wardrobe, I was looking for pieces that I can buy for life. These are pieces that may have a high upfront cost, but since they’re high quality, timeless and versatile, the cost per wear is low.
While this sounds great in theory, in practice, buying for life takes confidence and experience. For example, the first thing I bought as part of my wardrobe revamp was a dark wash Levi’s 511 Slim Fit jeans. I eventually fell in love with Japanese denim and I also learned that I prefer straight fit pants over slim fit pants.
What was intended as a buy it for life purchase ended up lasting me is months before I donated my Levi’s.
Before, I’d recommend friends to aim to buy clothes for life. Now, I recommend building a wardrobe slowly, buy it for life is optional. Often, the budget option is good enough. You can buy most of your basics at Uniqlo and that will last you years. Over time, you’ll figure out which pieces you gravitate towards. And you can choose to upgrade those pieces to a high quality alternative instead.
