Receiving Compliments From Someone You Admire
My friend K is one of the most creative people I know.
His primary medium is film, but he also organizes wild events and runs his own business. He also has great style and he dresses like a main character.
Last week, I was visiting my friend L for a podcast recording at the new studio where K also works. I ran into K, dapped him up, and he introduced me to his other friend.
“This is James,” he said. “He’s a brilliant creative. I’ll let him introduce himself, though.”
That compliment caught me off guard.
For one of the most creative people I know—someone surrounded by other talented creatives, many with large audiences and businesses of their own—to put me in that category meant a lot. Sometimes, I don’t see myself that way.
It reminded me that there are people out there who look at you, look at me, the same way I look at K. And giving them that vote of confidence, especially when they’re on the come up, is one of the best things you can do.
