Writing is Dead, Long Live Writing!

Sometimes I have conversations with both writers and non-writers alike that the art form of writing is dying. Studies show that Americans are reading fewer books than they’ve ever read before.

However, writing isn’t going anywhere. While the form of writing might have adapted to the times, it remains integral to most media formats. For instance, blogs and screenplays have replaced essays and playwrights, while hip-hop has taken the place of poetry. More recently, writing-focused social media platforms such as Twitter, Reddit, and Threads are gaining increasing popularity.

Writing remains a fundamental craft in the 21st century, even as formats shift and evolve.
