Caring About Details No One Else Sees
Eric Steffen left his finance job to create a Brooklyn-based denim brand specializing in bespoke jeans. My tailor carries a few pairs of Eric’s jeans, and I loved the detailing. From the Brooklyn Bridge-inspired stitching on the back pockets to the dragon-shaped Brooklyn logo on the leather patch, and even the map of Brooklyn printed on the inside pockets—every aspect of these jeans is Brooklyn coded.
While watching a video about Eric’s process, one moment stood out to me:
Eric: You want this piece of fabric hidden beneath this piece of fabric.
Interviewer: Will people ever see it?
Eric: No. But I will. If you open up a pair of jeans and see fabric sticking out, it means the pattern-making is off—and I can’t trust the entire garment.
In an era dominated by fast fashion, even high-end brands often make compromises, especially in places most people will never notice.
Eric’s refusal to cut corners—even for a detail hidden from view—is the mark of a true craftsperson.
