Do it Now or Never
I recently caught up with my friend E, who is currently traveling through Latin America. Listening to his stories reminded me of my own solo trip to South America two years ago. I look back fondly on that trip and am glad I decided to take it.
Backpacking was the perfect adventure for me right after college. I had just graduated, had no relationships or lease holding me down, and was comfortable with a low standard of living.
However, I’m not sure I can do a trip like that again now. It’s much more difficult to take time off for travel when you’re working full-time. I have a lease and relationships in New York City, along with various responsibilities and obligations. Additionally, my interest in menswear means that what I wear is no longer an afterthought. While I treasure that time in my life, I recognize that my priorities and lifestyle have changed since then. The carefree backpacking lifestyle I once enjoyed may no longer suit my current circumstances.
But I also don’t feel any FOMO. I already checked solo traveling off my bucket list. If I had hesitated and not taken my solo trip, I might have regretted it. But since I’ve already done it, I don’t have any lingering regrets.
Certain life stages offer unique opportunities that may not be available later on. Solo travel is one such opportunity.
