Exchanging Socials

Over the past two months of solo travel I’ve easily met 100+ people and made many friends along the way. Before we part ways, it’s custom to exchange social media to keep in touch. The go to social media platform being Instagram.

Before, when I made a friend in high school or university the go to social media platform was Facebook. But as Facebook’s popularity declined, Instagram dethroned Facebook as the platform of choice for many people including myself. As my Facebook usage decreases, I begin to lose touch with many friends that I added exclusively on that platform. It’s only a matter of time before the same happens to Instagram.

That’s one problem with building a network on social media platforms. If the platform declines, so does the value of the network you built on it. This is why my newsletter is the best way to keep in touch with me. There, I’ll send personal updates about what I’ve done and what I’m up to. And since I own the email list I’m protected from the volatility of these platforms.
