Going Far

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. - African Proverb

Back in high school I used to breakdance but I wasn’t any good. In retrospect, one of the root causes was I didn’t have a crew. I didn’t have a crew to inspire me, to learn from, to teach, to grow with. As a result, I practiced alone in my basement for years without making much progress.

On the contrary, when I joined my city’s orchestra and my school’s band I became a much better musician. I found the rehearsals to be fun and the concerts were exhilarating. My peers inspired me to improve and we built strong camaraderie over our shared struggle and experiences.

It was the same story when it came to writing. My friend started a writing group and that group motivated me from when I first started writing.

Whatever it is that you want to improve in, whether it be breakdancing, violin, or writing, find a community of people on the same journey as you. The internet has made this easier than ever. This community will help you grow, keep you accountable, and inspire you to do more.

What do you want to accomplish? How can you find your community?
