How to Maintain Social Ties in NYC

You know that one friend everyone seems to know? For me, that’s David. He’s one of the most well-connected people I know.

I asked him what his secret was.

He told me that he hosts—a lot. Dinners, podcast mixers, conferences, all kinds of events.

But what surprised me was his second answer: he doesn’t travel.

It’s an underrated insight. Many of my New York friends travel frequently, and while there are clear benefits, one major downside is that it disrupts social connections. Especially when you’re just starting to build relationships, consistency matters. If you’re constantly away, you lose the momentum needed to turn new connections into lasting friendships.
