Reading Diverse Perspectives
Last week, while updating my favorites page, I noticed that most of my favorite pieces were created by men, in particular white men. There’s especially a lack of non-western and female creators on that list.
Consuming content from diverse authors builds a broader perspective and empathy. In recent years, curating an annual reading list was my way of intentionally adding diverse perspectives to my information diet. However, the vast majority of books in the canon, or really any old book, were written by white men. Reflecting on that makes me wonder of what knowledge and stories have been lost throughout history because of lack of opportunity for less fortunate minorities.
