Why Bother Having a Resume?

Over the past few weeks, I went all in to get this internship I wanted. I did everything in my control to prepare for it, and now that all the interview are over, whether I get it or not is out of my hands now.

However, I understand that this is a game, nothing more. This isn’t the end goal either but rather a step towards it. I want to create things like essays, products, companies, and organizations. I want my life to be marked by projects not by jobs.

Seth Godin’s piece on resumes, has been top of mind for me recently. Resumes are simply generic list of credentials and keywords. Where ATS systems and recruiters are looking for any reason to reject you.

My resumes undervalues me. I might not have the best credentials but what I do have is people that would vouch for me. What I have is projects that I gave my all to and that I’m proud of. What I have is a blog where I share all my ideas and insights.

I do all this work and most people won’t notice it. They might disregard it because it doesn’t fit the box that they’re looking for. But as Seth says:

Great jobs, world class jobs, jobs people kill for… those jobs don’t get filled by people emailing in resumes. Ever.
